In 1983, the first massive demonstrations against the Pinochet regime began. Thousands participated. On protest nights, there were barricades, pots and pans banging, and the inevitable police retaliation. In the August protest more than one hundred people were killed by the Army and Police.

Chilean trovador Jorge Venegas, former member of the folk group Semilla, sings about the underground, armed resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship in his song El Grito Ardiente. Now an anarchist, Venegas was a supporter of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR) in the 1980s, the armed wing of the Communist Party of Chile that formed in the early 1980s, which later became its own separate organization.

This book presents a collection of writings from Chile’s Movement of the Revolutionary Left (MIR) from 1968 to 1974. The original compilation, made by members of that organization who saved many internal documents from oblivion or destruction, focused on the work of the Secretary General of the MIR, Miguel Enríquez. For this reason, many important texts to understand the positions and ideas of MIR were absent. However, the expanded edition shows how the thought of Miguel Enríquez represents a collective political and ideological development. It is also the result of the work of many activists who contributed to one of the greatest political and ideological developments in the history of popular struggles in Chile and in our America.

tu regresarás dentro del cobre!”This is a really cool (and short, only 2:00) song by famed Mexican trovador Oscar Chavez, dedicated to the late, then-recently-deposed Chilean President Salvador Allende (pictured). This
comes from an album featuring leftist Mexican singers showing solidarity with the Chilean people, including a song by Amparo Ochoa, who I have previously featured on this blog. Download the album here.
Oscar Chavez is known for his sharp political critique of the corruption and nepotism in the then-ruling PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), as well as his often humorous lyrics that poke fun at the idiosyncrasies of Mexican politics. He is not particularly well known for his voice, though it’s still worth a listen for the lyrical content in which he speaks of Allende as being resurrected among the people in various ways.
